Great talk as always by Rory! I am interested in the books he puts in a plug for at 30:25. I have read Alchemy and Transport for humans. Can anyone tell me the names of the other two books (IDEAS and BETTER are visible but not the full titles). Thank you!

One small thing which I would like to see in all cars is a better use of colours. For example, British Racing Green, French Navy, Burgundy and Caramel look more chic and premium than the traditional black, white, red and blue. A tie up with a quality paint manufacturer like Farrow & Ball or Benjamin Moore would be good. The car would then complement your home & your lifestyle. Also, the interiors of the cars look a bit plasticky and cheap which is not a great selling point. Don’t be so sure about brand snobbery. In the absence of a young home owning public demographic, the car is the one area where people can look superior while making a big purchase.

Great discussion that made many good points 👏🏾 However, racism has NOT changed as drastically as she believes it has. We still regularly see audio and video recordings of deeply racist comments, jokes, and outbursts in meetings of executives, council members, school boards, at the mall, so many Walmarts, frat/sorority parties, in classrooms, etc. They're popping up everywhere all the time _today_. Most recently: racist and misogynoir-ist comment by a white woman (who's a school teacher) on singer Ciara's Instagram post just a few days ago. We've still got AN EXTREMELY long way to go

The problem with popular solutions is that a lot of people are very clueless. Having a bikeable walkable city would be great. But if you even mention spending money on cycling infrastructure on something like my city's Facebook page, tons of people oppose it wildly. They cannot seem to understand the benefits of having space for bikes and pedestrians. Some people's vote should not count because they are terribly misinformed.

Re: your article in Australian Financial Review 23/12/23; you said that (a) spotters in the IDF were females and (b) their repeated warnings to superior officers about the impending Hamas attack was ignored, because they were females. You, self-servingly, presented this as gender bias against females. You failed to mention: that being a spotter was probably the best option for females as it is not as dangerous as combat duties and may not require much physical exertion. Also, it is possible that superior officers would have ignored spotters, regardless of gender. Thankfully, most women are too smart to fall for your BS. Even the wretched feminists probably know better and will stubbornly refuse to speak the truth. No idea how or why The King's College invited you to speak... maybe, they were in need of light comedy relief.

Asserts that poor people are more likely to be victims of major crimes. Then criticizes downplaying the effect of individual agency on life outcomes. Asserts that successful people minimize the value of hard work and personal initiative. Then links internal locus of control to success. Asserts that elite university students learn trendy jargon just to flaunt status. Then quotes Bourdieu. Play the video on half speed, it's easier to see the gaps under the jumps. Factors beyond personal variation can dominate baseline probabilities while internal locus of control remains adaptive at the margin. Those wealthy enough to pursue higher education may acquire costly knowledge and skills, not just vacuous social plumage. You can get eyes and clicks with a pithy title chiding a current political slogan, but it weakens the argument and invites a pre-polarized response. As would "What do bow ties and chosen-people theology have in common?" It's hard to make science starting from ideology.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:04 😨 Profiting from the suffering of others is perceived as morally repugnant, even when not directly responsible for the suffering. 02:21 💰 Profiting from morally questionable actions leads to lower perceptions of morality, trustworthiness, and increased blame. 04:03 🔌 People demonstrate "hyper altruistic" preferences, valuing profits gained from harming others less than those gained from harming themselves. 06:09 🤔 Moral decision-making involves an extra cognitive step that downgrades the value of money based on its moral consequences. 09:47 🧠 The brain's dopamine levels can influence hyper altruism, with increased dopamine reducing these moral preferences. 17:21 💼 Institutions and organizations can leverage aversion to harm to promote ethical products and consider the impact of dopamine-stimulating cues on pro-social behavior. 22:07 👤 Moral behavior results from an interaction between visceral reactions to harm and later-evolved cognitive strategies in the prefrontal cortex. 24:53 🧠 Words like "considerate" and "thoughtful" reflect the extra cognitive step in moral decision-making. 25:06 💰 Money earned with effort or pain may be valued more highly than money received without effort. 25:19 ⚡ Subjecting individuals to pain or effort before receiving money might increase the perceived value of the money received from the government. 25:48 👥 Perceived laziness or carelessness in caring for others could lead to hyperbolic discounting, affecting how people prioritize their actions and rewards for themselves and others.
